How To Locate Your Chihuahua Puppy
A Chihuahua puppy can be a great choice of a family pet for many folks, as long as you exercise some caution in deciding where you will get your puppy. Pet stores will advertise, "Chihuahua puppies for sale!" and people will flock to the shop to get their pet. However, pet stores that sell dogs are really nothing more than a broker who is working for commercial breeders and puppy mills that are interested in nothing more than taking your money for a substandard dog. These places do not care about breeding animals that are healthy or well socialized. Purchasing a dog from a pet store is simply asking for trouble.
However, breeders of Chihuahuas are not all created equal either, and you need to be able to determine whether the breeder you select is a reputable one or one that you would be better to stay away from. It is also a fact that some "breeders" offering Chihuahua puppies for sale are merely con-artists that want to take your money and run, but by doing your homework you can protect yourself from these shady types as well.
Finding a breeder is the best way to purchase a Chihuahua puppy for sale, but not all who claim to be breeders really are. To find out for sure, check the registration papers for the mother of your puppy. If the person's name is on the papers, then he is the legitimate owner of the dog. If not, you are dealing with a broker, which takes you back to the problems listed above.
If you can determine that you are indeed working with the actual breeder, there are then some other red flags to watch for. First, bad breeders will not have veterinarian records for their dogs, often because they are trying to cut corners by cutting back on vet visits. Next, a breeder that does not allow you to see the place where the puppies are being cared for may not be keeping his puppies in a clean environment. Puppies that live in their own waste can be very difficult dogs to housetrain. Finally, no Chihuahua breeder should allow you to take a puppy home until he is at least ten weeks of age, due to the frailty of these small pups.
Now that you know what a bad breeder looks like, it's time to learn the characteristics of a good breeder with Chihuahua puppies for sale. First, just because a breeder has puppies available, that doesn't mean that he is going to sell them to the highest bidder. Good breeders are not just in it for the cash, they are primarily interested in the betterment of the breed and the best care for their dogs. A good breeder will have you sign a contract that states that if at any time you are no longer able to care for the dog, you will return it to the breeder.
Good breeders have nothing to hide in terms of where their dogs live, because the area is always clean and well maintained. His dogs are like a part of the family, and because of this, they are well socialized. By finding a good breeder, you are much more likely to find a healthy, attractive and friendly pet.

Have you ever bought a puppy from a pet store before you were educated about puppy mills?
If so, please describe your experience. and NO I am definitely not going to buy a pet store puppy. I just want to hear your stories.
Well, I bought an English Bulldog puppy from a pet store that was located in our local mall about 3 years ago. I was, and still am, educated about puppy mills.
This pet store was not part of a huge chain, rather, it was just one store whose owner was located in the mall. They had several purebred puppies, all of which were certified to come from "responsible" breeders; no puppy mills or backyard breeders.
I paid $2500.00 for my puppy, and got a lot of free things with him, like a supply of the Science Diet he had been eating, a bed and kennel, nail clippers, a collar, feeder and waterer, free vet evaluation, and a microchip.
Something about the free vet evaluation that impressed me was that I could take him to any vet I wanted to in the local area, and if he was found to have any problems, I could bring him back for a full refund.
Well, within the first 2 weeks of having him, I took him for his free health check, and he was found to have been born with orthopaedic problems, common congenital defects in his breed. The vet recommended a bulldog specialist in the midwest, estimated the price for me, and asked if I wanted to put him to sleep. I said, "ABSOLUTELTY NOT!", and called the bulldog specialist I had been refered to. I also called the store I bought him from, and true to their word, they offered me a full refund if I brought him back. I was already in love with him, and he was fine otherwise, so I declined.
My poor little puppy had several surgeries, at a cost of about $6000.
Fast forward to the day of my dog's last surgery, about 2 months later. He's perfectly fine, a happy, healthy, gorgeous pup with a spectacular personality. The pet store owner called me to inquire about the puppy's health. I told her what was going on with the surgeries, and she was sad, but impressed that I would spend that much money on my dog. She not only refunded the money I paid for him, but split the cost of the surgeries with me. She said that she would have had to destroy him if I had brought him back to her, and being an animal lover, she was so happy that he went to a good home.
He's had to have the usual cherry eye surgery and soft palate surgeries that most bulldogs need, but today, he's a perfectly healthy, smart, muscular, and well-trained dog that everyone just falls in love with. I've had to switch vets lately because I've moved, and my new vet is so amazed at how healthy he is compared to other bulldogs.
So, I guess I've had an amazingly good experience with a pet store, who not only sold me a great dog, but also followed up by calling me, and made good on their promise. I'm glad you wanted to hear about my story, I haven't really told anyone how much I've been through with him. I'd honestly never buy a dog from a pet store again (unless it was this local one!), but I've never been sorry for what I've got. I'm really lucky.
