Reducing Airborne Allergens Safely
Allergy season isn't fun for those who suffer from allergies. Runny noses, frequent sneezes, headaches, and sore throats are common symptoms. Allergic reactions occur in the home when contaminants infiltrate the air we breathe... If you're among those who are constantly being attacked by airborne allergens, there are some positive steps that you can take in order to reduce or eliminate the invaders that are the causes of allergies. Eliminating allergens should be the first step, medication should be the last.
Dust mites are the most common cause for indoor allergies. In order to control dust mites and eliminate the allergies that they trigger, wash bed clothes each week and dry on high heat. Use anti-allergen casings for mattresses and bed clothes. Energy Star washers are more efficient than conventional ones for eliminating allergens. Use natural cleaners to clean furniture and vacuum carpets with a HEPA filter vacuum cleaner on a weekly basis. If possible, try to use an energy efficient one. For children, use hypo-allergenic toys in the house that can be washed in hot water, rather than the more commonly used stuffed animals. This will also help anyone with chemical sensitivities to VOCs and other pollutants. Using an air purifier will also help to improve the air up to 99%. It is also a good measure to dehumidify the air. Dust mites thrive in humidity levels above 50%, so you can take steps to reduce humidity levels to between 30-50 percent with a dehumidifier. Use a small dehumidifier to remove excess moisture from closets, cabinets and other small spaces. Monitor humidity levels with a hygrometer.
For pollen allergies, there are preventative measures that can be taken as well. Avoid outdoor activities in the morning. Days that are dry and breezy have higher pollen counts, so exercise indoors to avoid allergens. Yoga and other exercises that emphasize breathing work great. Avoid mowing the lawn too frequently. It will also save lots of energy. Close all your windows at home. Use filter screens if windows must be opened, and a window fan with built-in filter to get rid of things floating in. Try not to hang laundry outside during pollen season. Instead hang it in rooms with fans. Remove shoes before entering your home so nothing gets tracked. Shower and wash your hair every night before going to bed. Pollen collects on clothing, hair, and exposed parts of your body, so rinsing well will get rid of it.
Many of us love our pets, but have reactions to their dander. There are ways to keep the pet and feel better with allergies. Using an air filter helps greatly. Wash your pet weekly with a dander-reducing shampoo, then follow with an anti-dander spray, preferable ones that are made from green materials. Wash your hands after touching your pet. Regular cleaning helps keep their dander off of surfaces.
Mold is another major irritant. Clean the refrigerator drip pan every few months. When mold grows in this pan, the refrigerator fan blows the mold spores into the room. Use nontoxic cleaners regularly around the home to prevent any new growth. Reduce moisture in the air with a dehumidifier, and keep the air free of allergens with an air filter.
Though we may not be able to control everything that causes allergic reactions, there is plenty that can be done right in the home.
